Covina Homeowners Enjoy California Weather in an Old-Town Setting

When you arrive in Covina, you may encounter the slogan “One Mile Square and All There,” which is a remnant when the city was first incorporated and was a mere square mile.

Over the years, this city in Los Angeles County has grown significantly along with neighboring towns in the San Gabriel Valley. In 1965, a new motto solidified to embody the values of the community- “Where Friendship is Traditional.”

Covina owes its name to Frederick Eaton, who recognized the beauty of the cove formed by the San Gabriel Mountains that embraced the existing vineyards in the valley. Combining the words “cove” and “vine,” Eaton coined the term Covina in 1885. In 1901, the city was incorporated and adopted its first slogan in 1922.  Despite its origin, it was not the vineyards that gave Covina an economic head-start. Instead, grapefruit and orange groves allowed the city to be recognized as one of the world's top orange producers in the early 1900s.

The area continued to grow oranges until the mid-1900s, when housing developments began to replace the orange groves. Visitors can reach out to the Covina Valley Historical Society to consult its archives and see pictorial evidence of the evolution of Covina.  Despite its growth, Covina leaders have paid close attention to preserving the small-city feel, especially in its downtown area. As a result, a plan was developed to keep the city center's pedestrian nature and highlight those small and family-owned businesses that make up the community. Vintage clothing stores, restaurants, and antique shops line up the streets. At its core, one can find the Center for the Performing Arts, which anchors the downtown area as a gathering spot for Covina residents.

Aside from the charms of Covina itself, it sits in a privileged location to explore the greater Los Angeles area. The Metrolink and numerous freeways can have you in places like downtown LA in short order. Some places you may want to explore include-

Covina residents have much to take advantage of and enjoy. From the mountains to the beach, it is all within driving distance and waiting for you.
